Students cannot thrive if they do not feel safe, seen, and supported. In her classroom, Ebony created a fun and supportive learning environment where students laughed and explored. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ebony created safe and supportive learning environments at the YMCA for students whose families were essential workers. Ebony Burnett believes every child deserves a learning environment where they can focus, grow, and feel a sense of belonging.
Though metal detectors are important tools for school safety, security goes far beyond that. Our students also need access to mental health support, caring adults, inclusive practices, and buildings that meet their basic needs. A truly supportive environment wraps around the whole child and honors the needs of the entire school community.
Ebony has led initiatives that prioritize student well-being and whole-school support. From securing funding for school nurses to coordinating mental health resources for the hundreds of students at the YMCA of Greensboro and overseeing safe learning environments during COVID, she has consistently put student safety and support at the center.
Ebony believes we should:
Advocate for school safety strategies that go beyond policing and include wellness, mental health, and positive school culture
Push for adequate staffing of nurses, counselors, and support personnel in every school
Ensure buildings are safe, well-maintained, and welcoming for all students
Champion policies that promote emotional safety
